A short, stemless plant in Violaceae family, with small, almost round leaves on weakly wavy-pointed margins, with long tails, from the middle of which rises (at the apex of a 2-3 cm long tail) a single, 1.5-3 cm long, violet-purple flower of the well-known topiary shape, with five petals, one of which is pointed downwards and four raised upwards. Blooms in July-August. Grows on rocks and boulders, throughout the entire range of the Carpathian Mountains, at high altitudes, usually alpine areas.
